This map of Portsmouth, New Hampshire, was surveyed in 1813 by John Groves Hales. A massive fire destroyed much of downtown on December 22, 1813. Over a hundred homes, sixty-four shops and dozens of barns were destroyed in the blaze which started near Court and Church streets. Hales quickly appended his map, outlining the area destroyed by the fire. Both copies of this map in the Society’s collection include this addition.
